WILD HORSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Every morning is a gift. The world presents itself in a slightly different light. Shadows fall at new angles. Colors shift. Faces soften or harden depending on the stories they’ve lived the day before.

"Ultimately, the film reaches its most resonant truth: in the unbroken wildness of these mythical beings—and in the moments when that freedom is threatened—we recognize reflections of our own lives, our longing for meaning, and our shared fragility".

By sitting with the wild horses far away from civilization, immersed in nature, watching their stories play out, I experienced something far richer and more profound than simple happiness.

As a photographer, my work has became a path to access a deep primal bond we share when standing eye-to-eye with a wild creature. To look into the eyes of a wild horse is to discover a story to follow that often resembles our own and brings to light the importance of preservation.

This time around, we will wrap up with a discussion of two production options I offer for my wild horse photographic artwork: flush mounted plexiglass (acrylic) and archival canvas.

From the very moment of his birth, the wobbly-legged colt is tethered to his mother. This reliance is both fragile and profound. He shadows her every step knowing instinctively that her presence is his only guarantee of safety.

Wild horse photography has always been my way of slowing down time. It’s a pursuit that forces me to intentionally look at the world.

Wild horse photography is a humbling reminder to focus on the present, not anchor ourselves to the past.

And then it happened - a cloud of dust started rising and we could see and hear the entire herd.

In the thick of such challenging and tiring circumstances, the moments of true rest are an absolute necessity. When a wild horse finally surrenders to deep sleep it's a profound act of release. In these precious, vulnerable hours, all the burdens of their tireless desert life are momentarily set aside.

In the presence of that gray stallion in the desert’s quiet expanse, I found the essence of introspection - an invitation to listen without words, pause and reflect.

The simplicity, the paring of life to the basic elements and elimination of distractions are the reason I have been drawn to the desert.

A wild horse, bathed in filtered light as if painted by the sunrise itself, becomes a symbol of freedom and mystery.

As with any other form of art, a powerful photograph has the ability to stir something inside us that hasn't been "awakened" for sometime.

The bond between Native Americans and their horses is also evident in the way they care for and train these animals.

The lower Salt River with it's forest and beautiful landscape provides an incredible backdrop to photograph wild horses.
