The Mystique of Wild Horses

“WILD HORSES! Even if you have never seen one, chances are if you grew up in the United States you know what they mean. They are freedom. They are independence. They are the ragtag misfits defying incredible odds. They are the lowborn outsiders whose nobility springs from the adversity of living a simple life. In short, they are American. Or at least they are what we tell ourselves we are, and what we aspire to be.” - David Phillips, Wild Horse Country

"Duke", a determined stallion from the Pine Nut mountains in Nevada exhibits intense focus, heading into the wind.

MUSTANGS have long been an iconic symbol of the American West and hold a special place in the American identity. Their untamed spirit and rugged beauty have inspired countless works of art and literature, as well as capturing the hearts of many Americans. It's my belief that the mystique surrounding wild mustangs stems from their ability to survive and thrive in harsh environments; they are persistent survivors, and their free-roaming nature speaks to the freedom and independence that is deeply ingrained in American culture.

Rising repeatedly from hard fought battles, this McCullough Peaks wild stallion's scars clearly display his fortitude and determination.

ART has played a significant role in the way that the ideal of wild mustangs has become ingrained in the American identity. Captivated by their majestic beauty and freedom, artists’ depictions of wild mustangs have helped to solidify their place in the American consciousness. Through art, we are able to see ourselves more clearly. And in the art of the wild, we see part of ourselves reflected, as the wild mustangs represent qualities that we value as Americans: freedom, independence, and strength.

THE ART THAT CELEBRATES WILD HORSES also serves as a reminder of the importance of their preservation into the future. By immersing ourselves in art that features wild mustangs, we are able to connect more deeply not only with the natural world, but with our American identity.
