Pure, Unguarded Stillness

For more than a decade, I’ve returned again and again to the Onaqui Mountains in the Great Basin Desert of Utah, following a herd of wild horses that has become unexpectedly familiar to me.

Recently, I found myself back among them experiencing the dust rising in the early morning light, the quiet rhythm of the vast desert range where the same families I’ve watched have grown and survived over the years. There’s a strange comfort in being able to recognize individual horses many years later in a place defined by its wildness.

Last year, I released a new image from this herd, an image I titled Release. It captured a very rare moment:

a powerful wild stallion, completely asleep, his head resting on the ground.

Wild stallions are the vigilant guardians of their families. They lead, they defend, they watch. Every day is a negotiation with the harsh landscape, rival stallions, and the responsibility of keeping a band safe. And yet, in that moment, all of it fell away. What remained was pure, unguarded stillness. Even their sleep—if you can call it that—is usually a half-rest taken while standing, ears flicking at every sound.

To witness a wild stallion surrender fully to rest, especially in my presence, felt like stumbling upon a

secret - almost as if I shouldn’t be there.

We like to imagine ourselves as different from the wild world, but we’re not. We, too, push through long stretches of stress, noise, and responsibility. We stay alert long after our minds and bodies beg for pause. But just like that stallion, we need moments when we let everything drop—moments of true unguarded rest.

Wild horse photography has become for me a means of storytelling, advocacy, and preservation.

As I travel the untamed landscapes of the American West, capturing the beauty and grace of wild mustangs, I hope to instill in others the same sense of wonder and respect for these magnificent creatures and the beautiful creation all around us.
